Project Spotlight: The Parker Awning

This wood framed awning covers an elegant balcony space.Wood-framed awnings are an elegant cooling solution for windows, balconies, and patios that receive direct sunlight. When we build them we take measurements of the window and its surroundings, and then design an awning that is complementary. Overhead awnings cool outdoor spaces, and in the warmer months they prevent heat from reaching indoors as well.

This wood framed window awning matches the architecture of the house well.

This particular balcony awning is in Cambridge, MA, at the home of the late author Robert B. Parker and his wife Joan.  We built and installed the awning in the Spring of 2009. The Parkers asked us to create an awning that would complement the ornate Victorian style of their home, as well as protect from rain. The awning provides enough shelter to leave the balcony doors open during summer showers.

Precise construction ensured an elegant finished awning. Don built the painted mahogany frame, and carefully laminated the curved front beam to match the outer curve of the balcony. We made the awning out of Sunbrella®, in the classic Parchment shade, and meticulously fitted it to the frame. Once complete, an afternoon trip was enough to install the whole structure.

If you are interested in a frame awning of your own, please give us a call at 774. 849. 3505. We can accommodate every specification in the design of a custom frame and awning, and we welcome the opportunity to build one for you.
